Ft. Irwin Suspect Arrested
In Death Of 4-Year Old

DATE WIRED:  Monday, November 10, 2014.

INCIDENT:  Incident occurred on - Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 5:00 P.M.

LOCATIONS:  5100 block of Rio Hondo Cove, Fort Irwin.

SUSPECTS:  Jonathan Hernandez, 25 year old resident of Fort Irwin.

VICTIM:  Silas Torres, 4 year old resident of Fort Irwin.

SUMMARY

    On Saturday, October 5, 2013, at approximatley 5:00 P.M., medical aid was called to a residence in the 5100 block of Rio Hondo Cove, Fort Irwin, reference a 4 yeard old child unresponsive with CPR in progress.  The child was identified as Silas Torres who was transported to Weed Army Hospital at Fort Irwin and later to Loma Linda University Medical Center in critical condition.

    On Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at approximatley 12:55 P.M., Torres was pronounced deceased.  Due to the circumstances surrounding Torres' death the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Homicide Detail was requested to assist with the investigation.

    Over the course of the last year, Invesigators from the Homicide Detail worked with special agents from the Army's Criminal Investigation Command at Fort Irwin and pathologists from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Coroner Division.  On Thursday, September 11, 2014, as a result of the investigation by all agencies, Torres' death was determined to be a homicide by the Sheriff's Coroner Division.

    The case was submitted to the District Attorney's Office and on Thursday, November 6, 2014, a warrant was issued for Jonathan Hernandez' arrest for the murder of Silas Torres.  Hernandez is the step-father to the victim, Silas Torres.

    On Friday, November 7, 2014, detectives from the Homicide Detail and special agents from the Criminal Investigation Command arrested Hernandez at Fort Irwin.  Hernandez was booked into the High Desert Detention Center later the same day.
