Newberry Springs is a Fertile Field for Trickery
They say a sucker is born every minute, but Newberry Springs
seems to be the preferred migratory nesting ground for the entire sucker species.
It has become a literal field of dreams for Cadiz, Inc., a company that
has spent forty years mastering the art of promising water to gullible
people.
Con artists find an easy mark with those who are clueless in
Newberry and who are filled with the evil of parading themselves as self-appointed,
community ambassadors. By just blowing smoke and saying the word "free," con
artists in Newberry easily set the hook.
Four Decades of Failure
You have to admire the sheer audacity of Cadiz, Inc.
They have managed to bamboozle investors for forty years without ever
showing a corporate profit. That takes talent. It's a business
model built entirely on deception and the greed of people willing to invest
in sweet talk.
Cadiz, Inc. has purchased 45,000 acres of sand and it is
currently trying to "ruthlessly navigate" the regulatory process - which
is corporate-speak for "trying to find a legal loophole big enough to drive
a stolen aquifer through."
The "Free Water" Fairy Tale
Everyone loves the idea of free water, much like everyone
loves the idea of a calorie-free donut. But in the real world, nothing
is free.
The Cadiz Aquifer: This is where the "free water" lives and belongs.
The Reality: Cadiz, Inc. sucking an aquifer dry isn't a "resource
solution" as the company states, it's an ecological autopsy. The local
environment and wildlife would be collateral damage in Cadiz's quest to see
a green number on a balance sheet.
The Northern Pipeline's Operation is Pure Delusion.
If you want to know how well this water plan is going, just
look at some of the "players":
1. Metropolitan Water District of Southern California: They have
blocked Cadiz, Inc.'s access to the Colorado River Aqueduct. Apparently,
the MWD isn't interested in helping Cadiz play God with the water table.
2. State of California: They won't even let Cadiz use the Northern
Pipeline across a single mile of state land. That makes the pipeline
useless.
3. The California Legislature: They passed SB 307, which is
basically a restraining order, a "kill switch," against Cadiz, Inc. mining
its water.
4. State of Arizona: In November 2025, the Arizona Water Infrastructure
Finance Authority (WIFA) turned down the much-needed Cadiz water because it
didn't want a relationship with Cadiz, Inc.
What Does Cadiz, Inc. Currently Need ?
A part of Cadiz, Inc.'s sacred marketing mantra has been its
salvation water for disadvantaged communities. But what disadvantaged community
has Cadiz, Inc. signed up for its Cadiz water?
Cadiz, Inc. has long claimed itself to be the answer
to disadvantaged communities' need for clean, reliable water. Newberry
Springs is disadvantaged, but we do not need Cadiz water! Our
overdrafting is stabilizing, and we have hundreds of years of water below us.
Cadiz, Inc.'s long-held claim to serve Cadiz water to
disadvantaged communities, to win golden points for the company's eligibility
for federal grants, needs to get at least one disadvantaged community to sign
up.
We know that Cadiz, Inc. hasn't been upfront regarding its
inability to provide water to Newberry. Its promises are empty.
But an MOU from Newberry would assist Cadiz, Inc. in acquiring federal funding
that could be transferred to its other needs. For Newberry, it is likely to
acquire one thing. Getting screwed!
A Note to the goofy "Optimists": My previous reporting has laid
all of this out in plain English for years, yet the local Cadiz cheering team
in Newberry continues to cry that I am "sooo negative." It is an incredibly
weak strategy to call someone "negative" for clearly citing the law and
reality.
These are the same local people who refuse to do any Internet
research because fact-checking takes time, and it is easier to be spoon-fed
Cadiz's corporate propaganda, like toddlers in high chairs.
These people aren't leaders; they're just egos living
in a fantasy who enjoy the comfort of promoting a shared delusion.
Experiencing neighbors in Newberry Springs is like stepping
into a warp time zone of 40 years ago - not for the nostalgia, but because that's
the last time many of these aging folks updated their critical thinking.
