SUMMARY

On September 20, 2016, Deputy Mamon of the Barstow Sheriff's Station conducted a suspicious vehicle check in the Newberry Springs area of Harvard Road.  While examining the vehicle, Mamon saw two males a short distance away.  He made eye contact with the males who both fled over a fence.  Mamon provided dispatch with basic information then gave chase.  Deputy Rodriguez heard the radio traffic and immediately went to assist.

Once on scene, Rodriguez and Mamon worked as a team to coordinate a perimeter, evacuated residents of two properties and conduct an initial search for the two males.  The vehicle identification number (VIN) was queried through dispatch.  Deputies learned the two males were wanted for carjacking, vehicle theft, burglary and possibly had a stolen handgun.  A perimeter was set and maintained; one suspect was taken into custody after he was found hiding in a tree.  That suspect was not in possession of the firearm.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's, Specialized Enforcement Division (SED) was called to assist with the search for the second suspect who was believed to be armed and hiding within the fenced property, which contained numerous structures such as an old school bus, motorhomes, campers, sheds, buildings and two homes.  Once SED arrived and donned equipment, the second suspect surrendered.  The firearm was found in a refrigerator on the property.

The investigation revealed the two males were juveniles wanted in Riverside for carjacking with no bail warrants for their arrest.  Additionally, they were also wanted in connection to a residential burglary where a gun and vehicle were stolen two days earlier in Victorville.  To avoid detection, the suspects placed stolen plates on the stolen vehicle.  The suspicious vehicle, which started Mamon's investigation, was the reported stolen car and the recovered gun was the reported stolen gun out of Victorville.  The two juveniles were arrested and booked at High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Center for felony receiving stolen property.  No bail was set due to the no-bail arrest warrants.
